Modifying a documents paper size, orientation and margins is a common requirement which can easily be achieved using the geometry package. There are two ways to set the desired values: provide them as parameters to the \usepackage statement as in the example above, or. use the \geometry command in the preamble.
The easiest way to change margins in LaTeX is by using the geometry package. To use a new package, use the \usepackage{..} function, specifying the package you want to use within curly brackets. You can specify your margins in the square brackets.
The default margins in Word for USLetter paper are top, bottom=1in and left,right=1.25in. As @JosephWright says, you can easily create that with the geometry package: \usepackage[tmargin=1in,bmargin=1in,lmargin=1.25in,rmargin=1.25in]{geometry}. Change section fonts.

Like so then I can change various aspects of how the page comes in for example if I put a couple of square brackets. In between the use package. And where it says geometry.
LaTeXs margins are, by default, 1.5 inches wide on 12pt documents, 1.75 inches wide on 11pt documents, and 1.875 inches wide on 10pt documents. This is the standard for book margins. If you want to change them, you have several options: the geometry package, the fullpage package or changing the margins by hand.
Relative to that point the left margin in LaTeX is \oddsidemargin on odd pages and \evensidemargin on even pages. The total paper width is \paperwidth so the right margin on an odd page is \paperwidth - \textwidth - \oddsidemargin - 1in . To read and use margin lengths and the like, check this MWE.
On American letter paper (8.5 inch 11 inch) Plain TeXs default settings produce a text block measuring 6.5 inch 8.9 inch with left, right and top margins all equal to 1 inch and a bottom margin approximately equal to 1.1 inch.
