If the EGT overlimit happens after V1 or after liftoff, the flight crew must continue the takeoff. They should wait until the aircraft is safely established on its climb path above 400 ft before they apply the ECAM/FCOM procedure and gently reduce the thrust of the affected engine.
Beginning at full rich, as you reduce the fuel flow (i.e. you lean the engine) the exhaust gas temperature will rise. Eventually, it docHubes a maximum, or peak temperature (peak EGT) and any further leaning causes the EGT to drop. Mixture settings that are rich of peak EGT provide more power.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
Generally speaking, the lower your EGT, the better. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety. What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good!
An EGT over limit due to normal engine wear does not affect the engine thrust, safe continuation of the takeoff is therefore possible. Below 80 knots, an ECAM caution will trigger and the takeoff may be aborted. Above 80 knots, ECAM caution is inhibited, no crew action required.
As the mixture is leaned and we move to the right, all tracked parameters increase and peak, but at different points. For example, the most HP is available at around 100 degrees (F) rich of peak EGT (ROP). (For economy, many airframe manufacturers recommend running the engine in this range, usually 50-75 degrees ROP.)
Typically, the car exhaust pipes docHub a temperature of 400-500 degrees Fahrenheit. But some performance vehicles might have temperatures in the range of 800-1000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Exhaust Gas Temperature margin is the difference between the engines EGT during a full-rated takeoff at reference conditions and the EGT limit set by the manufacturer. This margin represents the safety cushion between an engines actual exhaust gas temperature and the maximum safe operating temperature.
