The terms are used interchangeably, but in fact, they are different. Room darkening refers to all shades that block from 95 to 99 percent of light. Any shade that blocks less than 95 percent is called light filtering. In contrast, blackout shades block all light from entering a room.
While sometimes used interchangeably to mean the same thing, blackout shades are not the same as room-darkening shades. Room-darkening shades reduce approximately 95-99 percent of light that enters a room. On the other hand, blackout styles can eliminate brightness by up to 100 percent in some cases.
Blue-light blocking glasses have filters in their lenses that block or absorb blue light, and in some cases UV light, from getting through. That means if you use these glasses when looking at a screen, especially after dark, they can help reduce exposure to blue light waves that can keep you awake.
In terms of light-filtering ability, blinds and shades may also be categorized as follows: Light Filtering Blinds: Block out less than 95% of natural light. Room Darkening Blinds: Block out 95-99% of natural light. Blackout Shades: Block out nearly 100% of natural light.
The difference lies in their special coated fabric Blockout/Blackout Curtains have a special coating of acrylic or liquefied rubber. The number of layers can sometimes differ the more coats of rubber there are, the more opaque the curtain and the greater blockout/blackout capacity the coated fabrics has.
Thermal vs Blackout: What are the differences? The key differences between the two types of curtains are that blackout curtains were designed primarily to block out light while thermal curtains are intended to keep a room warm or cold.
IKEAs Marjun blackout curtains are the least expensive curtains we recommend, theyre nearly as good at blocking light as the Sebastian Insulated curtains, and the fabric and color-blocked design looks better.
