If you are trying to a black ink cartridge in a color cartridge slot, your printer will not function and you could potentially cause damage to the machine. Some photo inkjet printers require two black ink cartridges to print text and more defined shades of black in your photos.
Go to your computer and click “Print” from the file that you wanted to print. Click on “Properties” and then the “Color” tab next. Select the “Print in grayscale” option by clicking on its checkbox. You can now start printing in black and white.
Printers that use two cartridges (one black, one tri-color) can print if one cartridge is empty. To continue printing, remove the empty cartridge from the printer. If a Single-cartridge mode message displays, select OK. If you are using the black cartridge, prints are in black and white (grayscale).
When a color ink cartridge is empty, the machine cannot make a color copy. If you press Color (Colour) Start, the Brother machine print black and white. Only Plain Paper can be chosen as the paper type. All other paper types will not allow the machine to make a copy.
There are two kinds of black ink in the machine: dye ink (BK) and pigment ink (PGBK). The dye ink is used mainly for printing photos, illustration, etc., and the pigment ink is used for text-based documents. Each has different purposes so that even if one runs out, another will not be used instead.
