Blackout tattoos are a type of tattoo that involves tattooing an area of the body completely black. Although many people get blackout tattoos as a standalone piece, they are also a method of covering up unwanted tattoos.
A blackout tattoo is when a large section of the body (typically arms or legs) are inked with a solid, opaque covering of black ink. Basically, these tattoos are created by filling in a large area on the body with nothing but black ink, like coloring in a whole coloring page black.
The key to covering up a black tattoo is to choose a color that will contrast well with the black ink. For example, lighter colors such as white, yellow, or light green will stand out against the darkness of the black ink. Darker colors, such as dark green or blue, can also work well for covering up a black tattoo.
Black remains safest. Blue and green inks with copper phthalocyanine pigments are safe too. Some parlous mix their own inks; it's generally safest to use branded inks that list their ingredients, says Dr Amit Karkhanis, laser and cosmetic physician.
They Can Be Painful - Since they require such a large amount of ink and often cover sensitive areas like the ribs or spine, blackout tattoos can be quite painful. If you have a low pain threshold, then this might not be the style for you.
Basically, a blackout tattoo is when a major portion of the tatted area is fully filled in with solid black ink. It's typically meant to cover up bad tattoo work, but can also make for really cool negative space designs. The more you know!
Vikas says it takes at least 6 hours for a normal blackout tattoo to be completed. Mickey adds that the bigger the tattoo is in size, the more the sittings and the more needles that are involved.
In contrast to the en vogue styles, the Brutal Black Project tattoos are all black, very big, and usually involve the face. Another fun fact, the people receiving these tattoos often need to be physically restrained, because the pain is so intense. If the pain becomes too intense, they will let you opt out and leave.
Darker colors — such as royal blues, dark reds, greens, and black — may show more clearly than lighter colors on dark skin. However, tattoo artists can still incorporate lighter colors to create a colorful design. For example, white ink on a dark skin tone may still be visible but heal as a slightly darker color.
When it comes to cancer, black ink can be especially dangerous because it contains a very high level of benzo(a)pyrene. Benzo(a)pyrene is currently listed as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
