Muhammad Ali spent years training to become the greatest boxer the world had ever seen, but only moments to create the shortest poem. Ali captivated Harvardamp;#39;s graduating class in 1975 with his message of unity and friendship. When he finished, the audience wanted more. They wanted a poem. Ali delivered what is considered the shortest poem ever. amp;quot;Me, we.amp;quot; Or is it amp;quot;me, weeeeamp;quot;? No oneamp;#39;s really sure. Regardless, if these two words are a poem, then what exactly makes a poem a poem? Poets themselves have struggled with this question, often using metaphors to approximate a definition. Is a poem a little machine? A firework? An echo? A dream? Poetry generally has certain recognizable characteristics. One - poems emphasize languageamp;#39;s musical qualities. A blackout poem is a poem you can create without writing any words. It is made from a piece of writing that already exists- like, for example, the Declaration of Independence. To create your poem, you remove (black out) parts of the original text until only certain words and phrases remain.
Just like how the most difficult part of writing a traditional poem is figuring out which words to add to the page, the hardest part of writing a blackout poem is identifying which words to eliminate.
Blackout poetry, sometimes called erasure poetry, is where the writer uses an existing text and blacks out or erases words on the page in order to create a new poem. The words that remain after the erasure form the poem. Blackout poetry is a type of Found Poetry.
Take your chosen blacking out marker or pen and begin to black out all of the words that are not your chosen words. You can blackout the words in any way you wish many blackout poets do artful squiggles or make designs with the ink. This is the best time to let your imagination flow.
All you need to do is: Identify the text you want to use. Make note of meaningful words, phrases, or ideas. Mark out the text you wish to exclude from your poem. You can blackout text with lines or even drawings.
Grab a blank piece of paper and write them down in order, then read through them. Cross out the words you dont want. If you need a few connecting words (like a, the, it, or the like), then dive back in and see if you can find them between the words you want to connect. You often can.
If you arent familiar with blackout poetry, the general idea is to use text from an existing written work to create a poem by strategically covering some words from the text. This written work could be another poem, newspaper article, or page from an old book, so theres lots of room for flexibility and creativity.
