Blackout regulations were imposed on 1 September 1939, before the declaration of war. These required that all windows and doors should be covered at night with suitable material such as heavy curtains, cardboard or paint, to prevent the escape of any glimmer of light that might aid enemy aircraft.
People also had to put tape across their windows because shattered glass from bomb blasts was very dangerous. The government put up barrage balloons to force the German planes to fly higher. This would mean that their bombing would be less accurate.
Blackout regulations came into force as the war began. These meant that families had to cover up all windows at night to ensure that no light escaped that could aid enemy bombers to find their targets. Street lamps were also switched off and car headlights covered except for a narrow slit.
During World War II, blackouts were not merely an inconvenience. They were also a strategic necessity. The concept was simple yet profound: extinguish all artificial lights in cities and towns to obscure potential targets from enemy forces.
Blackout regulations began to be enforced in Britain in 1939. They required that all windows and doors were covered at night so that not even a glimmer could escape to eyes of enemy pilots. The government ensured that blackout material was available and affordable for every household.
The blackout caused widespread inconvenience, particularly for pedestrians at night. By January 1942, one in five people had some form of injury as a direct result of the blackout. Moreover, road accidents increased dramatically, with 1,130 deaths in September 1939 as opposed to 544 in the same month the previous year.
It was a relief to civilians when the full street lighting came back on in 1945, after more than five years of darkness. The end of the Blackout was symbolised for Londoners when the mighty Big Ben clock was again illuminated to signal the end of Britains darkest days.
