Accounting for Costs to Fulfill a Contract Under ASC 606 Other costs incurred to obtain the contract, regardless of whether the deal was signed, should be recognized as an expense when incurred unless those costs are explicit to the customer (ASC 606 section 340-40-25-3).
Accountants record bad debt as an expense under Sales, General, and Administrative expenses (SGA) on the income statement. Recording bad debt doesnt mean youve lost that money forever. Companies retain the right to collect these receivables should conditions change.
General Administrative (GA) Expense GA expenses are the overhead costs of a business, many of which are fixed or semi-fixed. These costs dont relate directly to selling products or services but rather to the general ongoing operation of the business.
A bad debt expense is typically considered an operating cost, usually falling under your organizations selling, general and administrative costs. This expense reduces a companys net income over the same period the sale resulting in bad debt was reported on its income statement.
Bad Debt Expense is not considered a contra account to Revenue. Its a stand-alone account usually classified as a selling expense (which you will see in the module on Merchandising Operations). However, Allowance for Doubtful Accounts is attached to Accounts Receivable.
Operating Expense means salaries, wages, cost of maintenance and operation, materials, supplies, insurance and all other items normally included under recognized accounting practices, but does not include allowances for depreciation in the value of physical property.
This expense is called bad debt expenses, and they are generally classified as sales and general administrative expense. Though part of an entry for bad debt expense resides on the balance sheet, bad debt expense is posted to the income statement.
The ASC 718 guidelines include three basic steps for expensing employee-stock-based compensation: Calculate the fair value of the equity compensation. Allocate the expense over the options useful economic life (more on that below) Reflect compensation expenses on your income statement.
