What is syncope? Syncope (SINK-a-pee) is another word for fainting or passing out. Someone is considered to have syncope if they become unconscious and go limp, then soon recover. For most people, syncope occurs once in a great while, if ever, and is not a sign of serious illness.
When someone drinks too much alcohol or too quickly, it can overwhelm or suppress the healthy performance of these systems in the body. This can lead to the person passing out or having alcohol poisoning.
The technical term for the type of memory loss that people typically experience during a blackout is known as anterograde amnesia.
Alcohol-related blackouts are gaps in a persons memory for events that occurred while they were intoxicated. These gaps happen when a person drinks enough alcohol to temporarily block the transfer of memories from short-term to long-term storageknown as memory consolidationin a brain area called the hippocampus.
En bloc blackouts are stretches of time for which the person has no memory whatsoever. Fragmentary blackouts are episodes for which the drinkers memory is spotty, with islands of memory providing some insight into what transpired, and for which more recall usually is possible if the drinker is cued by others.
The most common form of blackout involves spotty memories for events, with islands of memories separated by missing memories in between. This form often is referred to as a fragmentary blackout, a grayout, or a brownout.
