To protect flimsy paper, you could typically laminate it, but that wouldnt work with thermal paper since lamination is hot. The alternative, which I often use, is to get clear, wide packing tape, and attach strips across the whole surface, front and back. This forms a clear plastic layer over the whole thing.
The image is produced by heat, without printing ink, when the selected area of the thermal paper passes over the thermal print head. The image is created through the direct transfer of heat (thermal energy) to the thermal paper: thermal paper has a coating, which changes colour to black when exposed to heat.
Get your hairdryer and set it on medium, and blow hot air directly towards the receipt until the text becomes visible. You can also heat the receipt using a light bulb if you dont own a hairdryer. Regardless of the heat source, never try to apply heat on the front, as this will cause the whole thing to turn black.
Prevent receipts from fading Store receipts in sleeves that are made of materials other than plastic. Place the receipts in an area with extremely low exposure to temperature changes, heat, or moisture. Clean and non-oily hands can also reduce the chances of fading from thermal paper receipts.
Get a thick, heavy book. Open it to the back. Put the receipt flat on the page, and close the book. Leave it that way for 24 hours.
Alternatively, you can scan your receipts and store them in your digital albums. You can later reprint receipts if the initial receipt faded entirely. Avoid laminating your receipts as heat can cause further damage to the receipt.
