g-force induced loss of consciousness (abbreviated as G-LOC, pronounced JEE-lock) is a term generally used in aerospace physiology to describe a loss of consciousness occurring from excessive and sustained g-forces draining blood away from the brain causing cerebral hypoxia.
A healthy person may get G-LOC around 5-6 Gs, and others can withstand up to 9 Gs. When extreme positive G-force is applied (Tail slides, Hammerheads, and our favorite, the Lomcevak), external forces of gravity divert blood flow to the brain down to the feet.
Most of us would pass out with head-to-toe G forces of just 4 or 5 because our hearts cant summon the necessary pressure. Blood pools in our lower extremities, and our brains fail to get enough oxygen.
An untrained individual not used to the G-straining manoeuvre can black out between 4 and 6 g, particularly if this is pulled suddenly. A trained, fit individual wearing a g suit and practicing the straining manoeuvre can, with some difficulty, sustain up to 12-14g without loss of consciousness.
Kirby often says, At 10 Gs, its hard to breathe and feels like a house is sitting on your chest. Thats a ton of pressure, literally! When a person begins to lose consciousness due to positive Gs, this is called G-lock.
Its called GLOC G Loss of Consciousness. The pilot is rendered unconscious and the airplane is pilotless. Typically, when the pilot experiences GLOC and passes out, the G loads are instantly relaxed (because the pilot was maneuvering the aircraft at high G at the time).
In general, a whiteout is produced by the opposite effect that causes a greyout and a redout out is the inverse of a blackout. To experience a redout, the pilot must be inverted while exposed to G-forces, which can also happen in any vehicular accident on land, at sea or in the air.
Most of us can withstand up to 4-6G. Fighter pilots can manage up to about 9G for a second or two. But sustained G-forces of even 6G would be fatal. Astronauts endure around 3G on lift-off, one G of which is Earths own pull.
