In a review of 14 regions of the U.S. and about 300,000 dogs and cats up for adoption, the study found that black cats comprised 31 percent of cat adoptions, compared to 20 percent gray cats and 18 percent brown cats.
It has been a long-held belief that black dogs are the toughest to rehome. Their color means they do not photograph so easily, some people are superstitious about their color, and they dont stand out so well alongside dogs with brighter coats.
The eumelanin in a black cats coat is fragile which allows the sun to penetrate it and lighten it up. And while many cat owners and advocates appreciate their luscious coats, black cats are often picked last at adoption events where people tend to go for the more colourful felines first.
Some speculate that black pets do not photograph well and that makes them harder to place in good homes. I can tell you first hand that you can have a whole room full of cats at an adoption facility and if most or all of them are black people will say, Oh, you dont really have many cats for adoption!
If you adopted a cat from a shelter and you dont feel its working out you should return it to the shelter! Most shelters expect you to do so under just such circumstances rather than the alternative of dumping it or otherwise harming it and/or causing its demise just to be rid of it!
Black cats and black and white cats are the least often adopted. These cats spend the most time living in shelters, waiting to be adopted. At times, shelters wont accept these cats for their adoption programs because of their color.
The best course of action may involve returning the pet to the animal shelter or rescue organization that you adopted from (some adoption contracts stipulate that you return the pet if things arent going well). If this isnt the case or isnt possible, rehoming the pet yourself may be the best choice.
Did you know black cats are the most overlooked cat at animal shelters and take longer to be adopted than more brightly colored felines? Not sure why but it could be due to an old superstition that black cats are bad luck or cursed in some way.
