Most experienced shelter workers will tell you that black dogs are often adopted less than any other coat color. Be it black Labrador Retrievers, Shepherds, Rottweilers, etc., they are often passed over by potential adopters. This discrepancy in adoptions is referred to as Black Dog Syndrome.
Three major studies support the theory that black dogs are harder to place, with one going as far as concluding that black dogs were more likely to be judged as unfriendly and potentially more aggressive. Additional studies have shown inconclusive results or results questioning whether the syndrome exists.
A study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science in 2002 found that black coat colors negatively influenced adoption rates for both dogs and cats. Researchers said adoption rates were much lower in pure-black animals.
In addition to the stigmas of bad luck and witchcraft, black animals also face a tough time being adopted because their dark coats often lead to poor photos. Being less photogenic means theyre more likely to be overlooked by potential adopters.
If weeks, or even months after adoption, you are still struggling with feelings of Adopters Remorse, its also possible that its simply a bad match. Ironically, the feelings of guilt surrounding the thought of returning a pet can compound with the feelings of Adopters Remorse.
Black cats are also most often ignored by many rescue groups because they are so hard to place. These cats are often left waiting in pounds and shelters with hopes of finding a loving home, only to be destroyed once their time is up. Kindness For Cats does not discriminate based on color.
The best course of action may involve returning the pet to the animal shelter or rescue organization that you adopted from (some adoption contracts stipulate that you return the pet if things arent going well). If this isnt the case or isnt possible, rehoming the pet yourself may be the best choice.
Staffordshire Terriers (Pit bulls) are the most often adopted shelter dog simply because they are the most surrendered and the most found as a stray by Animal Control Officers.
