Televisions, computer equipment, game consoles, fans, lights and all other smaller appliances should be unplugged, especially if they were in use when the power went out. Larger appliances, such as refrigerators, should not be unplugged.
Brownouts are intentional or unintentional drops in voltage from utilities or other power sources that can cause damage to your homes electronics. Brownouts can cause damage to insulation and cause unexpected electronic failure in the future.
Brownouts and Blackouts: What is a Blackout? A blackout is a complete interruption of power in a given service area. Rolling blackouts are controlled and usually preplanned interruptions of service. A brownout is a partial, temporary reduction in system voltage or total system capacity.
The term brownout comes from the dimming experienced by lighting when the voltage sags. A voltage reduction may be an effect of disruption of an electrical grid, or may occasionally be imposed in an effort to reduce load and prevent a power outage known as a blackout.
Preparing for a Power Outage Have flashlights ready in different parts of your home. Ensure cell phones and power banks are fully charged. You may have to stay at home during a power outage, think of other items your family may need like nonperishable food, water, blankets or toys close by.
Blackouts can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few days, or even weeks. A brownout is only a partial loss of power, where a systems capacity and voltage are reduced. Brownouts usually happen when theres high demand across the power grid.
More blackouts are expected in 2024 and beyond. The report, produced by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), says that as we head into 2024, North Americans can expect more frequent and prolonged power outages.
This occurs when National Grid deliberately reduces the voltage to ration electricity supplies and prevent a possible blackout. Tell-tale signs of a brownout include flickering lights, electrical appliances quickly switching off and turning back on again, and intermittent internet connections.
