1790: Copyright Act of 1790 It granted American authors the right to print, re-print, or publish their work for a period of 14 years and to renew for another fourteen. The law was meant to provide an incentive to authors, artists, and scientists to create original works by providing creators with a monopoly.
How do you check if something is copyrighted? We found out earlier that every original creative work is copyrighted as soon as its written down or saved in some tangible form. If you want to check registrations, though, you need to use the search engine on copyright.gov.
The Copyright Act permits authors or their heirs, under certain circumstances, to terminate the exclusive or nonexclusive grant of a transfer or license of an authors copyright in a work or of any right under a copyright.
Perhaps the most straightforward and commonly used method to stop copyright infringement is to send a so-called Copyright Infringement Notice directly to the offending party.
Call the publisher and ask to make sure of the works public domain status. If the publication date is not available, check out the works copyright registration in the Catalog of Copyright Entries. The point of this is to determine whether the desired work is eligible for public domain status.
Watermarks. The easiest way to check images for copyright is to examine them thoroughly. Usually, authors of photos, digital art, and infographics leave a note on the images themselves. You can find watermarks in the corners of the image or in the background as a translucent logo or inscription.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (U.S. PTO) makes available a public search engine, called the Trademark Electronic Search System, that shows what marks are copyrighted and in what category they are registered in. This search engine can be found at .
