EPS is slightly more permeable to air and moisture, whereas XPS is more resistant to water vapour. Therefore, if youre looking to insulate a humid area (e.g. floors, cellars and foundation walls), XPS is your best option.
Problems with XPS Insulation XPSs low-permeability can lead to condensation and mold problems. Over time, the gas bubbles within the XPS leak out, leaving air that lessens the panels insulation value. Most building professionals do not recommend XPS insulation on flat roofs because it will deform above 80 degrees.
Determining the best rigid foam insulation is more complicated than looking into initial R-values alone, especially in below grade insulation projects. While XPS has an initially high R-value of 5 per inch, it is not stable and will degrade over time.
Cons of XPS: Higher cost compared to EPS. Heavier weight, which can make it more difficult to handle and . Lower R-value per inch of thickness compared to EPS. More difficult to recycle, as it is often coated with materials that make it difficult to separate the polystyrene from other materials.
In summary, polystyrenes advantages lie in its versatility, insulation properties, lightweight nature, cost-effectiveness, and transparency. However, its disadvantages encompass environmental concerns, brittleness, potential health risks, and energy-intensive production.
If youre looking to insulate a space prone to humidity (e.g. floors, cellars, and foundation walls), XPS is your best option. PIR and PUR are a no-go in those scenarios, because water may soak into the compound of the product, increasing its weight and (in the longer term) reducing its thermal value.
