DETROIT – It's been 19 years since a major power outage put 50 million people from Detroit to New York in the dark. About 50 million people lost power Aug. 14, 2003, when a tree branch in Ohio started an outage that cascaded across a broad swath from Michigan to New England and Canada.
Overtaxed, they cut out by 4:05 P.M., tripping a cascade of failures throughout southeastern Canada and eight northeastern states. All told, 50 million people lost power for up to two days in the biggest blackout in North American history.
The outage was fixed for most in a day but lasted for a few days for many people. People in Metro Detroit, Lansing and Ann Arbor were affected, and that led to crowded stores, packed restaurants, and overbooked hotels.
What Happened? August 14 and 15, 2003 - The northeastern U.S. and southern Canada suffered the worst power blackout in history. The blackout, which lasted for about 14 hours, was caused by a faulty relay in the Adam Beck Station of Ontario, Canada. Traffic lights ceased working, making travel by cars and busses extremely difficult. Trains carrying passengers were stuck in tunnels and many were stuck in elevators.
The 1977 outage lasted 25 hours and led to looting in many neighborhoods.
The city that never sleeps came to a halt on July 13 and 14, 1977, after a lightning storm left New York and Westchester County without power for hours before looters and vandals terrorized the streets.
In NYC, all 11,600 traffic signals ceased to work. Policemen and volunteers worked together to direct traffic in major streets, but city streets remained chaotic. The MTA also shut down as a result of the blackout, leaving up to 400,000 people stranded in subway cars. People waited for rescue in stranded elevators.
