The events that followed showed both the best and the worst of human nature. Represented the challenges of the time, and forever changed the future of New York City. At 8:37 p.m. on July 13th, 1977, a lightning bolt struck a critical substation along the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York. Within an hour three other lightning bolts would strike critical lines. Efforts by Consolidated Edison to shed power failed, and a cascade of blown critical breakers caught the city of New York off from the nations power grid. The city went dark at 9:34 pm. The blackout, which lasted for about 14 hours, was caused by a faulty relay in the Adam Beck Station of Ontario, Canada. Traffic lights ceased working, making travel by cars and busses extremely difficult. Trains carrying passengers were stuck in tunnels and many were stuck in elevators.
On Aug. 14, 2003, at about 4:10 p.m., millions of people living throughout Metro Detroit and Michigan were without power for at least one day, some even longer. The report said this was all because of a tree branch in Ohio that sparked an outage docHubing seven other states and Canada.
The blackouts proximate cause was a software bug in the alarm system at the control room of FirstEnergy, an Akron, Ohiobased company, which rendered operators unaware of the need to redistribute load after overloaded transmission lines drooped into foliage.
