Youve got an update after abuse at a Texas City nursing home was caught on camera. Were told the employees involved have been fired. We want to warn you, the video were about to show you is upsetting. 87 year old Cornelio Salinas, who only has one leg, was on the floor when two employees hit, kicked, and dragged him back to his bed. They then closed the curtain, hiding everything that happened afterward. His grandson tells us they were behind the curtain for 15 to 20 minutes and his grandfather ended up on the floor. Again, the facility Solidago health and rehabilitation gave us this updated statement, it reads in part. Quote. Yes, blackouts and power disruptions have become more frequent over the past few years. This is mainly driven by extreme weather events in the US. Low-income areas and states that are prone to extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and winter storms, are more likely to experience blackouts.
In 2022, California accounted for 24% of all U.S. power outages, and Texas accounted for 14%. California, Texas, and Pennsylvania are the states most affected by power outages during the winter.
In fact, New York has been ranked in the top five states where power outages occur most frequently for five years running.
Northeast blackout of 2003. Manhattan blackout of July 2019.
In 2017, California ranked number one in four of the categories that Eaton Blackout Tracker monitors. These categories are vehicle accidents, animal outages, faulty equipment and weather. The state saw 438 outages over the year that affected almost 3 million people.
Blackouts can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few days, or even weeks. A brownout is only a partial loss of power, where a systems capacity and voltage are reduced. Brownouts usually happen when theres high demand across the power grid.
Current estimates suggest that black older adults are overrepresented in nursing homes, making up 8.7% of the population aged 65 and older, but 14.3% of nursing home residents (Harris-Kojetin et al., 2019).
Basically, any interruption between power generation and the supply of electricity to homes can cause a power outage. It can stem from inclement weather conditions, human error, equipment failure, and even animal interference.
