(CBS DETROIT) - Its the largest blackout in U.S. history, and in Detroit, millions of people were without power for at least a day. The 2003 Northeast Blackout left more than 50 million people between the northeast and portions of Canada without electricity.
August 14 and 15, 2003 - The northeastern U.S. and southern Canada suffered the worst power blackout in history. Areas affected extended from New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey west to Michigan, and from Ohio north to Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario. Approximately 50 million customers were impacted.
More blackouts are expected in 2024 and beyond. Thats because generators can go offline during prolonged cold snaps, threatening the reliability of the natural gas supply and infrastructure. However, some areas could see increased blackouts even under more moderate weather conditions, the NERC report says.
The blackout, which lasted for about 14 hours, was caused by a faulty relay in the Adam Beck Station of Ontario, Canada. Traffic lights ceased working, making travel by cars and busses extremely difficult. Trains carrying passengers were stuck in tunnels and many were stuck in elevators.
What caused the power outage? An investigation later revealed that the reason for the power outage was due to some overgrown trees that came into contact with power lines in Ohio. FirstEnergy Corporations EastLake plant shut down and the company was criticized for their poor line maintenance.
The Bay Area had its own experience with an unexpected, widespread blackout in December 1998, when a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. technicians error blew out a San Mateo County substation, taking power from some 1 million customers.
On August 14, 2003, a transmission line fault in Ohio caused by contact with a tree cascaded into what would become one of the largest outages in North American history plunging more than 50 million people in eight states and Ontario into darkness.
The lead up to the blackout started on the evening of July 13, 1977 when lightning hit the Buchanan South substation at 8:37 pm, tripping two circuit breakers. A second strike caused two transmission lines at the Indian Point Energy Center to go down and overloaded two other transmission lines.
