While there are no definitive warning signs for ACL surgery graft failure, patients should be vigilant for symptoms such as recurrent instability, persistent pain, or swelling after surgery, as these may indicate a potential problem with the graft.
Most people have some surgery-related pain and discomfort for the first week or so. Not surprisingly, pain from knee surgery decreases with time. By the end of a week or two at the most, you should have very little discomfort.
ACL grafts are weakest 5 to 12 weeks after surgery. You may feel stronger, but your knee is months from full recovery. Remain cautious.
Allograft: In this type of surgery, the surgeon replaces your torn ACL with a tendon graft from a donor. Yes, you read that right from a donor! Autograft: In contrast, an autograft involves taking tissue from your own body, usually from your hamstring tendon or patellar tendon, to reconstruct the ACL.
In general, the rate of failure for a patellar tendon autograft (from ones own tissues) is lower than a hamstrings autograft. In addition, failure rates for allograft (from cadaver tissue) are higher than those for using ones own tissue.
1, 2 Still, the most commonly used autografts for ACL reconstruction are the bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and hamstring tendons (HT). There is some evidence to suggest that BPTB autografts produce more pain than HT autografts both in the immediate postoperative period as well as in the long term.
Many patients typically achieve their full range of motion in three to four weeks and regain their pre-injury strength in three to four months.
The patellar tendon is the tendon in front of your knee. It attaches from the knee cap to the shin bone. It is the graft with the longest track record and is consider by many to be the gold-standard for ACL reconstruction.
