By default, data that is hidden in rows and columns in the worksheet is not displayed in a chart, and empty cells or null values are displayed as gaps. For most chart types, you can display the hidden data in a chart.
If youre experiencing Excel cells turning black while typing, the issue likely stems from cell formatting. To address this, select the problematic cell or cells and navigate to the Home tab. Utilize the Fill Color tool, represented by a paint bucket icon, to choose a background color that contrasts with black.
In general with the default formatting this means this is derived data. Right click on the cell and select Cell Status. That should indicate how that data was obtained, and as @TimVierhout said, a grey value is typically derived.
Remove cell shading Select the cells that contain a fill color or fill pattern. For more information on selecting cells in a worksheet, see Select cells, ranges, rows, or columns on a worksheet. On the Home tab, in the Font group, select the arrow next to Fill Color, and then select No Fill.
