The Bass Pro brand blackout arrows are actually Gold Tip arrows. Gold Tip sells the arrows to Bass Pro at a discounted price to keep their business.
Randy Kitts is owner and president of Black Eagle Arrows LLC and Conquest Archery LLC.
The first variable you need to look at is draw weight. As draw weight increases, so should arrow rigidity (spine). Also, we strongly recommend that you use an arrow with at least 5 grains of weight per pound or draw weight (if you are shooting a 60 lb. bow, you should use and arrow of not less than 300 grains).
Specifications SpineLengthExt.Dia. 300 30 inch 0.285 350 30 inch 0.291 400 30 inch 0.293 500 30 inch 0.2981 more row
Thats why Gold Tip recommends the 400 spine for a 27-inch arrow shot at 60 pounds, as compared to the 340 at 30 inches. Understand that the manufacturers charts refer to arrow length, not draw length.
Overspine can also cause the arrow to porpoise or fish-tail in mid-flight, making it more difficult to hit the target accurately. This happens because the stiff arrow doesnt flex properly as it travels through the air.
The numbers refer to the spine of the arrow. The different spines refer to the stiffness, a 400 spine arrow is generally for bows 40-60 lbs. 350 spine is for bows roughly 55 - 75 lbs, and a 500 spine arrow is for bows roughly 30 - 50 lbs.
To choose an arrow spine you need three numbers, the actual peak draw weight of your bow, the tip weight you will be using, and the length of the arrow shaft. Using this information, go to the arrow manufacturers spine specifications and find an arrow spine chart.
