- So, in a world where people cant agree on anything, were gonna talk about some more controversial topics in archery, and this being speed versus mass for your arrow build in deer hunting. So, in your archery setup, do you prefer having a light and fast arrow or a heavy and slow arrow or somewhere in between? - Im somewhere in between, but Ive always prioritized mass because of my bow setup. I mean, I got a not normal wing span for a 61 guy. So a 30 or 30 half inch draw. Ive always shot, you know, at least 70 pounds. I mean, even going back to the very first bow that I bought that had wheels on it, it was 60 couple pounds at 16 or 17 years old. - Yeah. - My dad said, if you cant draw that, you dont need to be hunting. (interviewer laughs) Which is not the right thing to say to a kid, but in any regard, Ive always shot a heavier draw weight with a really long draw, so speed has never been a problem for me, per se. So Ive always kind of focused on momentum through mass. I m

The first variable you need to look at is draw weight. As draw weight increases, so should arrow rigidity (spine). Also, we strongly recommend that you use an arrow with at least 5 grains of weight per pound or draw weight (if you are shooting a 60 lb. bow, you should use and arrow of not less than 300 grains).
When an arrow is released from a bow, potential energy changes into kinetic energy.
Arrows generally come in 2 spine sizes, 5/16 and 11/32. The 5/16 is smaller in diameter and is therefore used in lesser poundage bows. The 11/32 is thicker and therefore stiffer and used for bow weights over 45lb.
To choose an arrow spine you need three numbers, the actual peak draw weight of your bow, the tip weight you will be using, and the length of the arrow shaft. Using this information, go to the arrow manufacturers spine specifications and find an arrow spine chart.
The Bass Pro brand blackout arrows are actually Gold Tip arrows. Gold Tip sells the arrows to Bass Pro at a discounted price to keep their business.
choose for a 70# bow and 29.5 draw lenght. I shoot a 70# bow with 29 draw and a 29 1/2 500 grain arrow with 360 spine and although lightly spined on paper, it works fine. I could also use 340 or even 300 spine with my same setup without any notable performance loss I would bet.
Carbon Blackout arrows have gained popularity for its quality, reliability and accuracy that matches brands like Carbon Express, Victory and Easton but without the U.S. Brand price tag.
The numbers refer to the spine of the arrow. The different spines refer to the stiffness, a 400 spine arrow is generally for bows 40-60 lbs. 350 spine is for bows roughly 55 - 75 lbs, and a 500 spine arrow is for bows roughly 30 - 50 lbs.
