any packet coming to the router is considered as inbound. any packet going out of the router is considered as outbound. in acl, we usually use it at interface, any packet entering to interface is considered as inbound by ACL.
Whitelisting and blacklisting are two methodologies to control access to websites, email, software and IP addresses on networks. Whitelisting denies access to all resources and only the owner can allow access. Blacklisting allows access to all with the provision that only certain items are denied.
ACLs on TCP and UDP ports are expressed as a list of IP addresses to Allow (whitelist mode) or Deny (blacklist mode). More advanced control over connecting clients is also possible through the Layer 4 Rules system.
If a whitelist is configured but no IP address is added to the whitelist, the listener forwards all requests. Blacklist: All requests from the IP addresses or CIDR blocks specified in the ACL are denied. Blacklists apply to scenarios in which you want to block access from specific IP addresses.
Components of ACLs All-access control list rules specify: The object and operation being secured The permissions required to access the object The object is the target to which access needs to be controlled. Each object consists of a type and name that uniquely identifies a particular table, field, or record.
Whitelist: allows access from specified IP addresses or CIDR blocks. Blacklist: denies access from specified IP addresses or CIDR blocks.
Blacklisting means the classification of something as not authorised or not trustworthy. Whitelisting, on the other hand, defines something as trustworthy/approved.
If the ACL does not contain any rule, the first rule is numbered 0. Whenever the step changes, the rules are renumbered, starting from 0. For example, if there are five rules numbered 5, 10, 13, 15, and 20, changing the step from 5 to 2 causes the rules to be renumbered 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8.
