Description. The troff command reads one or more files and formats the text for printing on a phototypesetter or comparable device. A postprocessor is then required to post process the output of the troff command to the target device.
The standard groff fonts TR for Times in roman style. TB for Times bold. TBI for Times in bold-italic style. TI for Times in italic style.
Nroff and troff are UNIX programs for formatting text files. Nroff is designed to format output for line printers and letter-quality printers; you can also display the output on your screen. Troff is designed for typesetting.
Groff (GNU troff) is a typesetting system that reads plain text mixed with formatting commands and produces formatted output. Output may be PostScript or PDF, html, or ASCII/UTF8 for display at the terminal. Formatting commands may be either low-level typesetting requests (primitives) or macros from a supplied set.
The nroff and troff commands format text for printing by interspersing the text with control sequences. Control sequences are either control line requests or escape requests that control text processing by the printing device.
troff features commands to designate fonts, spacing, paragraphs, margins, footnotes and more. Unlike many other text formatters, troff can position characters arbitrarily on a page, even overlapping them, and has a fully programmable input language.
The nroff command reads one or more files for printing on typewriter-like devices and line printers. If no file is specified or the - (minus sign) flag is specified as the last parameter, standard input is read by default. The File variable specifies files to be printed on a typewriter-like device by the nroff command.
