A trait is a language feature that tells the Rust compiler about functionality a type must provide. As you can see, the trait block looks very similar to the impl block, but we dont define a body, only a type signature.
Trait objects have some docHub limitations: methods invoked through a trait object cannot use generics, and cannot use Self except in receiver position. When designing a trait, decide early on whether the trait will be used as an object or as a bound on generics.
There is no inheritance in Rust. There are no fields in traits. There is simply no way of saying that in order to implement a trait, your type must have certain fields. Rather than conflate the concepts of record types, modules, and traits in this God-concept of class, Rust keeps these three concepts quite separate.
A trait object in Rust is a pointer to a value that implements a specific trait. They are used to implement Dynamic Dispatch in Rust by allowing the calling of methods on values of different types in a uniform manner.
Trait objects are more flexible than generics, as they allow the use of any type that implements the trait, regardless of what is known at compile time. However, generics are more performant than trait objects due to the avoidance of dynamic dispatch overhead.
The advantage of using trait objects and Rusts type system to write code similar to code using duck typing is that we never have to check whether a value implements a particular method at runtime or worry about getting errors if a value doesnt implement a method but we call it anyway.
