As EPUBs share many of the same accessibility requirements as the web, many of the same techniques (i.e., image descriptions) that apply to web accessibility can be used when authoring accessible EPUBs.
Using clear and concise language while designing an eBook is very important. This will help readers with disabilities understand the content of your eBook. Additionally, ensure that the non-textual content has text descriptions. You must also ensure that these text descriptions are meaningful in your eBooks context.
Quick EPUB accessibility techniques Use MathML to represent complex formulas for screen readers. Use semantic HTML whenever possible (to assist text-to-speech, use EPUB:type to add semantic information). Include appropriate metadata. Place all text in a logical reading order; dont rely only on visual cues.
A spine. As its name indicates, this is a backbone where the reading system finds the default reading order of all publication chapters. As these sections of a publication may not really represent book chapters, each item of the sequence is called a spine item.
You can open and read .EPUB files on both Windows and Mac devices if you download docHub Digital Editions to your computer. Open docHub Digital Editions on your machine. Select File, then Add to Library. Find the saved .EPUB file on your device. Double-click the .EPUB file you want to read.
I find the easiest method is to add the EPUB file to the open source program calibre You can then right click the file and select Edit file. The calibre editor will do the job of unpacking the file and the individual sections can then be edited. Youll find a knowledge of HTML and CSS will be useful.
