A trait, as related to genetics, is a specific characteristic of an individual. Traits can be determined by genes, environmental factors or by a combination of both. Traits can be qualitative (such as eye color) or quantitative (such as height or blood pressure).
The dyn Trait type is an unsized type. This means that we cannot know the size of a value of type dyn Trait at compile time. In Rust, the type of any variable cannot be an unsized type.
A trait object in Rust is a pointer to a value that implements a specific trait. They are used to implement Dynamic Dispatch in Rust by allowing the calling of methods on values of different types in a uniform manner.
We create a trait object by specifying some sort of pointer, such as a reference or a Box smart pointer, then the dyn keyword, and then specifying the relevant trait.
Trait objects are written as the keyword dyn followed by a set of trait bounds, but with the following restrictions on the trait bounds. All traits except the first trait must be auto traits, there may not be more than one lifetime, and opt-out bounds (e.g. ? Sized ) are not allowed.
Trait and lifetime bounds provide a way for generic items to restrict which types and lifetimes are used as their parameters. Bounds can be provided on any type in a where clause.
Nothing in Rust prevents a trait from having a method with the same name as another traits method, nor can it prevent us from implementing both of these traits on one type. Its also possible to have a method implemented directly on the type with the same name as methods from traits as well!
