The most effective letters of recommendation are written by professors or work supervisors who know you well enough to describe your academic, personal, or professional achievements and potential with candor, detail, and objectivity. Letters that compare you to your academic peers are often the most useful.
Beyond academic and intellectual qualities, a law school applicant should exhibit personal qualities that include maturity, good communication skills and the willingness to embrace diversity, says Anna Ivey, author of The Ivey Guide to Law School Admissions and graduate school admissions counselor at Anna Ivey
A few things to consider having your writers include in your LOR: Your name. Brief details of their relationship to you. Examples of your career/academic-specific skills and traits that stand out. Belief that you are a perfect fit for studying and practicing law.
Overall, it is best to address your letter in a more general manner (e.g., Dear Admissions Committee, etc.). - It is permissible to write your letter to a specific audience/program; please discuss this with the student so they may direct it to the correct program in their application portal.
Letters of recommendation do three things: I) provide facts about the applicant 2) render a judgment as to the applicants ability and 3) make the applicant come alive, stand out against other applicants so that he or she will be remembered in the decision process.
The format of a law school recommendation letter follows that of a standard letter of recommendation, it will contain an introduction, body paragraph(s) (as many as is necessary), and a conclusion followed by an invitation to discuss the applicant further and the writers contact information.
Letters should be 1 to 2 pages long, written on letterhead, and signed by the recommender. They should be submitted directly to LSAC.
The best reference is from someone who has high regard for your work, knows you well and is a good writer. Ideally, your reference should be able to evaluate your performance in the same way and in the same language as law schools admissions committee members evaluate students in their program.
