Reporting interest income on your tax return You should report tax-exempt and taxable interest on your income tax return (lines 2a and 2b of the 1040). You may also be required to file Schedule B, if your taxable income is more than $1,500 or under certain other conditions (see the form instructions).
For a covered security acquired with OID and bond premium, if you choose to report qualified stated interest in box 2 of Form 1099-OID, you must report any bond premium amortization on that security in box 10 of Form 1099-OID.
Also include on line 2a of your Form 1040 or 1040-SR any exempt-interest dividends from a mutual fund or other regulated investment company. This amount should be shown in box 12 of Form 1099-DIV. If an amount is shown in box 9 of Form 1099-INT, you must generally re- port it on line 2g of Form 6251.
In the Dividends and Distributions section of your Form 1099, you may have a value in Box 11: Exempt-interest dividends. This value represents dividends received from ETFs like MUB, which hold a broad range of U.S. municipal bonds that pay federal tax-exempt dividends.
Line 2 Purchases subject to use tax. Enter the purchase price of merchandise, equipment, or other tangible personal property which you purchased without paying California sales or use tax and which you used for purposes other than resale in the regular course of business.
Interest income must be documented on B on Form 1040 of the tax return.
Taxable interest income This includes the interest you earn in a bank savings account or from corporate bonds you invest in. However, if you earn interest on Series I or EE savings bonds issued after 1989 or from certain municipal bonds, you can exclude this income from your tax return and the Schedule B.
Typically, interest from corporate bonds will be in Box 1, interest from U.S. Treasuries will be in Box 3, and tax-exempt interest from muni bonds will be in Box 8. Even if you dont have to pay income tax on the interest, you still need to include it on your tax return.
Schedule B reports the interest and dividend income you receive during the tax year. However, you dont need to attach a Schedule B every year you earn interest or dividends. It is only required when the total exceeds certain thresholds.
However, if you acquired a tax-exempt bond at a premium, only report the net amount of tax-exempt interest on line 2a of your Form 1040 or 1040-SR (that is, the excess of the tax-exempt interest received during the year over the amortized bond premium for the year).
