hi my name is Micah with driver's ed direct and in this video today we are talking about blind spot checks for two reasons first as a driving instructor I've noticed that a lot of people aren't checking their blind spots the right way and second I've noticed that a lot of people aren't checking their blind spots enough so we're talking about both today in this video [Music] now what is a blind-spot check and how do we do it up a blind-spot check is a quick turn of the head from chin to shoulder either to the right chin to shoulder to the left before we make any type of lane change now the phrase over the shoulder you may have heard that before that is a blind spot check but it can be a little misleading when I heard the phrase over the shoulder I would turn my head and actually look over my shoulder but if you look too far it's hard to keep your car centered in the lane or or without drifting now your left and right mirrors actually show you what's really far over the shoulder behind...

The average car has 2 main blind spots, generally on the rear left and right side.
With your right eye still closed, hold up your left thumb. Place your left thumb next to your right thumb. Keep looking at your right thumb and slowly move your left thumb to the left. When it disappears, you found your left eyes blind spot.
A blind spot is an area in your range of vision that you cannot see properly but which you really should be able to see. For example, when you are driving a car, the area just behind your shoulders is often a blind spot.
Place your right thumb next to your left thumb. Keep looking at your left thumb. Slowly move your right thumb to the right while looking at your left thumb. When your right thumb disappears, you found your right eyes blind spot.
These blind spot areas include: directly in front, directly behind and along each sideespecially on the right side.
To check your blind spot, you can do a simple shoulder check. This includes looking left, and right, to look out of your side windows, just over your shoulder. Make sure to only turn your head, not your whole body, and to avoid turning the steering wheel in the direction of your shoulder check.
The most common are the rear quarter blind spots, areas towards the rear of the vehicle on both sides. Vehicles in the adjacent lanes of the road that fall into these blind spots may not be visible using only the cars mirrors.
Blind spots when driving are areas around your car that you cannot see when looking in your mirrors. They are so subtle that some drivers dont even realize they exist, which can often lead to accidents. However, blind spots arent completely unavoidable if you know how to look for them.
Before changing lanes, look into your rearview mirror for nearby vehicles and over your shoulder to check for blind spots (see the yellow area in the image above). The shaded areas are your blind spots. Watch for hazardsLook beyond the vehicle ahead of you.
Blind spots may occur in the front of the driver when the A-pillar (also called the windshield pillar), side-view mirror, or interior rear-view mirror block a drivers view of the road. Behind the driver, cargo, headrests, and additional pillars may reduce visibility.
