A scotoma is a blind spot or partial loss of vision in what is otherwise a perfectly normal visual field. It might look like a dark, fuzzy, or blurry spot, or it might look like a single spot of flickering light or arcs of light.
What causes a blind spot? Everyone has a normal blind spot thats about as big as a pinhead. In this spot, the optic nerve passes through the retina, where there are no photoreceptors there to detect light. No light-detecting cells means the eye cant send signals to the brain.
Procedure Take the rectangle in your right hand. Extend your arm with the rectangle at eye level. Slowly move your extended arm closer to your face. Cover your left eye with your left hand. With your left eye covered and your right eye focusing on the left shape, slowly move the paper closer toward your face.
Blind spots may occur in the front of the driver when the A-pillar (also called the windshield pillar), side-view mirror, or interior rear-view mirror block a drivers view of the road. Behind the driver, cargo, headrests, and additional pillars may reduce visibility.
This blind spot is there because the optic nerve fibers pass through the back of your retina inside your eye. Where the nerve passes through there are no cells receiving light. At this tiny spot, which is approximately the size of a pinhead, you are technically blind.
Before changing lanes, look into your rearview mirror for nearby vehicles and over your shoulder to check for blind spots (see the yellow area in the image above). The shaded areas are your blind spots. Watch for hazardsLook beyond the vehicle ahead of you.
The optic nerve carries info from the eyeball to the brain, then, spreads nerve fibers across the back of the eye, or retina. The small round spot where the nerve enters the back of your eye is called the optic disc. There are no light-detecting cells on this disc. As a result, you have scotoma.
The spot where your optic nerve connects to your retina has no light-sensitive cells, so you cant see anything there. Thats your blind spot.
Blind spots are all around vehicles, but their size and location vary ing to the type of vehicle. The main blind spots are located in front, at the rear, on the sides and behind the windshield pillars of the vehicle.
Everyone has a spot in the retina where the optic nerve connects. In this area, there are no light sensitive cells, so this part of your retina cannot see. We call this the blind spot. Your blind spot is not usually noticeable because your two eyes work together to cover up each eyes blind spot.
