What causes a blind spot? Everyone has a normal blind spot thats about as big as a pinhead. In this spot, the optic nerve passes through the retina, where there are no photoreceptors there to detect light. No light-detecting cells means the eye cant send signals to the brain.
The physiological blind spot is centered about 15 temporally from the point of fixation, due to the nasal anatomical location of the optic nerve head in relation to the fovea.
The blind spot of the right eye is located to the right of the centre of vision and vice versa in the left eye. With both eyes open, the blind spots are not perceived because the visual fields of the two eyes overlap.
To be able to transport the information to the brain, the nerve fibers have to break through the retina. This is done by the optic nerve bundle at a certain point, the blind spot, about 15 degrees peripherally (in the left eye to the peripheral left, in the right eye to the peripheral right).
The natural blind spot location (NBSL) represents an absolute scotoma in the visual field (VF) induced by the area of the optic disc on the retina which lacks of light-detecting photoreceptor cells1, 2.
The blind spot of the right eye is located to the right of the centre of vision and vice versa in the left eye. With both eyes open, the blind spots are not perceived because the visual fields of the two eyes overlap.
Everyone has a spot in their retina where the optic nerve connects. In this area there are no light-sensitive cells so this part of your retina cant see. We call this the blind spot. Most of the time you dont notice your blind spot because the spot in one eye doesnt match the spot in the other eye.
