Perfect Bound Sizes Regardless of book size, the cover needs to be at least 8.5 face-to-face (flat) to feed into the binder. The minimum width is 2.75 spine to face after trimming. Minimum height is 4.25 head to foot, but books can be bound in a 2up format and then trimmed apart.
During the binding process, an area of each page will disappear into the spine, also known as the gutter. Depending on how many pages are in the booklet, the gutter can take up between 1/4 3/8 of each page. Its good practice to leave at least a quarter inch of safety margin space on the insides of each page.

Setting the Margins for Printing For single-sided printing, the left-hand margin is required to be 3cm or greater to allow for the binding process.

Since perfect bound books are glued at the spine, it makes it harder to see or read content near the binding side (see the image below). To help avoid this, we recommend you have a 3/8 (0.375) margin on the binding side of all pages, including inside cover pages.
As a rule of thumb, we recommend that you use a 15mm margin on all edges except for the binding edge. The biding edge will require a slightly wider margin to leave space for the binding when printing your book. This prevents images and text from being lost in the fold when you open the book.
In general, for spiral or wire-o bound products we recommend 1/2 margins to be safe. However, if space is an issue, you can follow these specific guides: Holes for spiral binding are smaller and only require 1/4 of the binding edge. Wire-o holes are larger and require 1/2 margins.
