You have one ACL in each knee. It forms an X shape inside your knee with your posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The ACL is closer to the front of your knee. The PCL is closer to the back of your knee.
The term cruciate is Latin for cross. This name is fitting because the ACL crosses the posterior cruciate ligament to form an X. It is composed of strong, fibrous material and assists in controlling excessive motion by limiting mobility of the joint.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is the most performed orthopedic surgical procedure. The result of ACL reconstructions depends on multiple technical variables, including tension to be applied to the graft for fixation, knee-flexion angle during fixation and the type of fixation to the bone.
In classical Latin the verb cruciare is derived from crux, meaning cross. It became considered that cruciate was equivalent to cross-shaped.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is in the middle of the knee. It prevents the shin bone from sliding out in front of the thigh bone. Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) works with the ACL. It prevents the shin bone from sliding backward under the femur.
For example, an ACL tear often occurs along with tears to the MCL and the shock-absorbing cartilage in the knee (meniscus). Most ACL tears occur in the middle of the ligament, or the ligament is pulled off the thigh bone. These injuries form a gap between the torn edges, and do not heal on their own.
The concept of the cruciate incision where the skin is opened transversely and the fascia is incised vertically originated with Kstner in 1896.
