ConfigMaps are typically used for non-sensitive configuration data, while Secrets are used for storing sensitive information. ConfigMaps stores data as key-value pairs, whereas Secrets stores data as base64-encoded data, thereby ensuring an additional layer of security.
Secret text - copy the secret text and paste it into the Secret field. Username and password - specify the credentials Username and Password in their respective fields. Secret file - click the Choose file button next to the File field to select the secret file to upload to Jenkins.
Add and reference text secrets In your Harness account, select ACCOUNT SETTINGS, select Account Resources, and then select Secrets. Select New Secret, and then select Text. On the Add new Encrypted Text dialog, select the Secrets Manager that you want to use to encrypt this secret. Enter a Name for your secret.
Unlike Docker Secrets, Docker Configs are not encrypted at rest and are directly mounted into the containers filesystem.
Use a ConfigMap for setting configuration data separately from application code. For example, imagine that you are developing an application that you can run on your own computer (for development) and in the cloud (to handle real traffic). You write the code to look in an environment variable named DATABASEHOST .
In the case of manifest files, we generally have a spec field whereas, in the case of a ConfigMap, we have a data or binary data field. The keys stored in the data field should not have a duplicate in the binary data field.
Using a Secret means that you dont need to include confidential data in your application code. Because Secrets can be created independently of the Pods that use them, there is less risk of the Secret (and its data) being exposed during the workflow of creating, viewing, and editing Pods.
The oc get secrets command can be used the list the secrets in the currently selected project / namespace. The -A or --all-namespaces flag can be used to list the secrets in every project / namespace. The -n or --namespace flag can be used to list the secrets in a certain project / namespace.
