A raw socket receives or sends the raw datagram not including link level headers. The IPv4 layer generates an IP header when sending a packet unless the IPHDRINCL socket option is enabled on the socket. When it is enabled, the packet must contain an IP header.
Raw TCP/IP is used to open a TCP socket-level connection over Port 9100, and stream a print-ready file to the printer input buffer.
The main difference is that an UdpSocket will have a sender and destination port, and the packets will have an UDP header. In order to receive an UDP packet, of course, the sender will have to match exactly the receiver port. An IP raw socket is totally different. It does have just the IP header, and nothing more.
An application must use recvfrom to read datagrams from a raw socket. Before you can receive packets on a raw socket, you must bind the socket to the IP address of the interface on which you want to receive packets.
Note that raw sockets bypass the normal TCP/IP processing system and send packets to the specific user application. Furthermore, raw sockets allow applications to directly access lower-level protocols such as the Internet Protocol (IP).
Creating a Raw Socket To create a socket of type SOCKRAW, call the socket or WSASocket function with the af parameter (address family) set to AFINET or AFINET6, the type parameter set to SOCKRAW, and the protocol parameter set to the protocol number required.
Commonly, the socket API is used for inter-process communication at the transport layer (OSI layer 4). However, some special socket types can be employed to access the network layer (OSI layer 3) and the data link layer (OSI layer 2). These socket types are called raw sockets.
