A DNS record is a database record used to map a URL to an IP address. DNS records are stored in DNS servers and work to help users connect their websites to the outside world. When the URL is entered and searched in the browser, that URL is forwarded to the DNS servers and then directed to the specific Web server.
A zone file is a text file that describes a DNS zone . The BIND file format is the industry preferred zone file format and has been widely adopted by DNS server software. The format is defined in RFC 1035.
For example, an A Record is used to point a logical domain name, such as google.com, to the IP address of Googles hosting server, 74.125. 224.147. These records point traffic from example.com (indicated by @) and ftp.example.com to the IP address 66.147. 224.236.
How Do I Add a Record to the DNS? Start the DNS Manager (Start - Programs - Administrative Tools - DNS Manager). Double-click on the name of the DNS server to display the list of zones. Right-click on the domain and select New Record. Enter the name (e.g., TAZ) and enter IP address.
To do a DNS lookup in a Windows computer, go to Start, then Run, and type command to open the command prompt. Type nslookup and hit Enter. Your search will bring back information about your local DNS default server and IP address.
1 Answer cat /etc/hostname dns-office. cat /etc/hosts yourIP dns-office.local. cat /etc/bind/named.conf.local zone zone1 { type master; file /etc/bind/db.zone1; };
Right-click the zone where you want to add a resource record, and then click Add DNS resource record. The Add DNS Resource Records dialog box opens. In Resource record properties, click DNS server and select the DNS server where you want to add one or more new resource records.
DNS records (aka zone files) are instructions that live in authoritative DNS servers and provide information about a domain including what IP address is associated with that domain and how to handle requests for that domain.
