bind() defines the local port and interface address for the connection. connect() does an implicit bind(0.0. 0.0, 0) if one has not been done previously (with zero being taken as any). For outgoing connections, this is generally acceptable and preferred.
An application must use recvfrom to read datagrams from a raw socket. Before you can receive packets on a raw socket, you must bind the socket to the IP address of the interface on which you want to receive packets.
A server has a bind() method which binds it to a specific IP and port so that it can listen to incoming requests on that IP and port. A server has a listen() method which puts the server into listen mode.
You would use bind when you want to the function being called to have a different this value than the default one. Use bind() when you want a function that always runs with a specific this value. Its useful for more functional programming, when passing around functions as callbacks or event handlers.
The bind() call binds a unique local name to the socket using descriptors. After calling socket(), the descriptor does not have a name associated with it. However, it does belong to a particular addressing family, as specified when socket() is called. The exact format of a name depends on the addressing family.
Because there is an internal bind() as part of connect(), if the socket isnt already bound, and because the server doesnt care what the clients port number is: it doesnt need to be fixed like the servers port number.
The bind() function creates a new bound function. Calling the bound function generally results in the execution of the function it wraps, which is also called the target function. The bound function will store the parameters passed which include the value of this and the first few arguments as its internal state.
The bind() function shall assign a local socket address address to a socket identified by descriptor socket that has no local socket address assigned. Sockets created with the socket() function are initially unnamed; they are identified only by their address family.
