Breathing and Relaxation Consider practicing some deep breathing exercises every few hours of binding. If you can't take a deep, full breath your binder might be too tight.
The tightness is a double-edged sword — sometimes you feel like you're being suffocated, but at other times a binder feels like a close hug. The longer I used binding, the more I could feel my body deteriorating. The physical pain got worse but so did the emotional.
The most important part of binding safely is wearing the right size binder and doing it properly. If worn incorrectly or compressing your soft tissue to a certain point, you can cause damage to your ribs and chest.
If you hope to get top surgery (a procedure to reduce or remove breast tissue), binding frequently can affect skin elasticity and impact surgery outcomes (4,5).
That said, even a dedicated binder is not without risk, and binding improperly or for too long can lead to chest and back pain, rib bruising and fractures, shortness of breath, overheating, and skin damage.
Unsafe binding may lead to permanent deformation of the breasts, scarring, and lung constriction, and long-term binding may adversely affect the outcome of a future mastectomy.
Although binding is often critical for mental health, negative physical side effects, ranging from chronic pain to rib fractures, are common.
Because of the potential risks with chest binding, people with underlying conditions may be at risk for further complications....If your binder is too small or too tight, it can: Restrict breathing. Irritate your skin. Break skin around the edges of the binder. Cause overheating. Bruise or fracture your ribs.
Symptoms trouble breathing. pain at the site of the injury. pain with movements like breathing or coughing. muscle spasms around the rib cage. irregular appearance of the rib cage. feeling or hearing a crack at the time of the injury, if a rib has broken.
We advice you to wear a compression binder after Top Surgery, 24/7 for at least 4 weeks. The binder helps prevent fluid build up and aids the skin in adhering back to the chest wall.
