If you are sending PII, include CUI in the subject of the email. following CUI. Also include a CUI indicator block after the body of the email. k. If any attachments contain PII, label them as CUI.
Data Encryption Encrypt PII both at rest and in transit to protect it from unauthorized access. Utilize strong encryption algorithms and secure key management practices to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data.
If the body of the email contains PII, the top and bottom of the email must include the marking CUI, and it should include a CUI indicator block. Must be digitally signed and encrypted. (Note: Digitally signing an email is NOT the same as appending a signature block to the bottom of the outgoing message contents.)
Encrypt Sensitive PII stored on CDs, DVDs, hard drives, floppy disks, and other removable media prior to mailing or sharing. Also, ensure that the media is properly labeled. Always verify that the recipient received the information. Note that FOIA requests may require different handling.

The sender should send two emails to the recipient: one with the password protected file attached; the other with the password to be used to access the file. Do not send both items in a single email.
Answer: Make a photocopy of the document you dont want to redact the original. On the photocopy, use a black marker to conceal the PII that you want to redact. Photocopy the redacted document. Save the 1st photocopy (with the black ink redaction) with the original, to show the redaction effort.
