What is not stored in an AMI?

Specifically, an AMI does not store instance settings such as the instance type, which determines the hardware of the host computer for your instance. It also does not store network settings like VPC configurations or security group details, as these are configured when you launch an instance from the AMI.

What is stored in an AMI?

Each AMI includes a template for the root volume required for a particular type of instance. A typical example might contain an operating system, an application server and applications.

Can AMI be shared across accounts?

Resolution. If you know the account IDs of the AWS accounts that you want to share the AMI with, follow the instructions at Share an AMI with specific AWS accounts. To copy the shared AMI, see Cross-account copying. Note: Sharing an AMI from different Regions isnt available.

What are AMIs not used for?

What are AMIs NOT used for? Add your own IP addresses. IP addresses are added to an instance as you create it. EBS Volumes CANNOT be attached to multiple EC2 instances at a time.

What does AMI include?

An AMI consists of the following: This includes the operating system, an application server, and applications. Launch permissions that control which AWS accounts can use the AMI to launch instances. A block device mapping that specifies the volumes to attach to the instance when its launched.

Does AMI include user data?

User Data is an attribute of an Amazon EC2 instance, not an AMI. There is software called cloud-init on the AMI that will look at the User Data and determine whether it is a script.

Does AMI store data?

Note: Instances created from AMIs dont retain or copy any data stored in instance store volumes. The source instance that you create the AMI from retains all data thats stored in the instance store. If your instance is running Linux, then see Create an Amazon EBS-Backed Linux AMI.
