Allow for ample enough margins that the reader isnt distracted by cramped-looking text. Margins of at least one inch are standard. Single space your text, skipping a line between paragraphs. You can indent paragraph beginnings or not, as long as youre consistent.
As remarked above, the first paragraph after a title or section heading is not indented. Every succeeding paragraph should be indented; the tab key on any keyboard will do this for you.
Begin every line of text from the left margin, except for the first line of each paragraph. Indent each line of a new paragraph one tab space, which should be set at 1.27 cm or 0.5 in (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 45).
Line Spacing: In general, double-space all parts of an APA Style paper, including the abstract, text, block quotations, table and figure numbers, titles, and notes, and reference list (including between and within entries). Do not add extra space before or after paragraphs.
Indent the first line of each paragraph of text 0.5 in. from the left margin. Use the tab key or the automatic paragraph-formatting function of your word-processing program to achieve the indentation (the default setting is likely already 0.5 in.). Do not use the space bar to create indentation.
In a book, too much white space can look awkward. Manuscript format is to indent the first line of each new paragraph (and to double space). Dont skip lines when doing this, unless youre indicating a larger break in the story. This is the industry standard, so editors and agents are expecting it.
The American Psychological Association (APA) Style The right margin shouldnt be justified (i.e., it should be left uneven). The first line of each paragraph should be indented by one-half inch. Create this indentation by using the Tab key on the keyboard, not by using multiple spaces with the keyboards space bar.
General Guidelines Make 1 inch margins on the top, bottom, and sides. The first word in every paragraph should be indented one half inch. APA recommends using a font that is accessible to all readers. Double space the entire research paper, including the title page. Left align the text.
