Just a word about the shapes of proteins. I make a big deal in my classes about the shapes of things. There are several proteins here that interact with DNA, and there are several shape motifs that are common in proteins that interact with DNA. One of them is the so-called amp;#39;zinc fingeramp;#39; protein. This is a protein that is associated with zinc ions, peppered as it were, throughout the protein. And then there are these helical regions that project from the protein into the major groove of the DNA. Thatamp;#39;s the business end of the zinc finger molecule when it binds to a sequence it recognizes. Another example of DNA binding protein is the amp;#39;helix-turn-helixamp;#39; motif. This is characteristic of a number of bacterial gene regulatory proteins, and you can see the helix turn, and then the other helix. And you can see the helices that project from this and actually also penetrate the major groove. So those penetrating helices at the bottom are what are really r
