Natalie: Hey everybody, its Natalie with the Final Stitch. Today were going to talk about labels. We have loved receiving all of your questions. And weve gotten some great ones about labeling. Weve had questions about how to make a simple label, how to attach them and give us some ideas on what to write on labels. So lets get right to those questions. Liz? Liz: So Penny George asked, Is there any chance you would show us how to attach a label to a quilt and also to a quilt that has been done for years? Natalie: Alright, well you can add labels to quilts whether theyre finished or not. Thats super easy. One of the things I like to do when adding a label is to put it in the binding so if your quilt has already been finished, you can just pick out the part and then restitch it down. Thats totally easy. But you could also attach it outside of the binding. So let me just start by showing you a couple of fun, easy labels. One that I like to do, first of all I like to put my labels

It is time to finish your quilt! You felt finished when you completed the quilt top and then again when the quilting was done, but for it to really be done finished, you need to do a binding. The binding goes around the edge of the quilt sealing all the layers together. Quilt Binding in 10 Easy Steps Hello Stitch post 2019/09/10 Hello Stitch post 2019/09/10
To sew a bias bound seam: A Take a length of bias binding and place along the edge you will be finishing (right sides together) - lining up the raw edges. Pin in place. Stitch binding in place with a 6mm (in) seam allowance (this will be just inside of the first crease line on the binding).
Most people will tell you to trim your quilt exactly on the edge of the quilt top, but if I can, I like to scoot my ruler out about 1/16 to 1/8 outside the edge of the quilt top. This gives me just a tiny bit of bulk that will help fill up the binding. Remember, we dont want squishy binding. Now you can make binding from satin fabric, but from someone thats tried it both ways, then youll find using ribbon makes things so much easier. I placed the ribbon so that the edge was level with the edge on the back of the quilt (if your ribbon has a pattern to it, place it pattern side down).
Binding a quilt is the final step in finishing. Before you bind, you need to somehow quilt your quilt. This means to attach the front and back, with batting in between. I usually machine quilt (or have someone else do it) my quilts these days.
For a large-scale applique work, also consider the option of quilting the background in advance. You can quilt the background fabric as if it were a whole-cloth quilt, with batting and backing fabric as usual. Then, add your hand stitched or machine stitched applique over the top of the already-quilted work.
