Typical layout for an essay is as shown here: Margins - between 2 cm and 2.54 cm (1 inch) all around. Line spacing - either 1.5 or double-line spacing. Alignment - left aligned (fully justified with a straight right-edge is not recommended as this reduces readability and accessibility).
For bound books 6x 9 or smaller, use 0.5 margins on the top, outside and bottom of books, and a 0.75 inside margin. For 8.5x11 documents (bound or unbound), use 1-inch margins. Adjust margins, font size, and columns to produce 65-70 characters per line (including spaces).
Select Layout Margins. Select Custom Margins. In Margins, use the Up and Down arrows to enter the values you want. Select OK when done.
As a rule of thumb, we recommend that you use a 15mm margin on all edges except for the binding edge. The biding edge will require a slightly wider margin to leave space for the binding when printing your book. This prevents images and text from being lost in the fold when you open the book.
Margins are very important when it comes to binding. No margins = Text/images cut off in the binding process. For single-sided printing, we recommend a margin of 3cm on the left side and 2.5 cm on the other three sides. For double-sided printing, we recommend a margin of 2.5 cm on all four sides.
Text and images may not line up correctly across the spine. This is a natural occurrence with a perfect-bound booklet. Generally speaking, 1/2 for your gutter margin is the best recommendation for most books.
Binding margin. The distance between the print and the edge of the page at the binding edge.
