The binding margin should be at least 40mm with 20mm on all other sides. If you print on both sides of the paper, you will need to mirror the margins, so that the wider margin is always on the bound edge.
The easiest way to change margins in LaTeX is by using the geometry package. To use a new package, use the \usepackage{..} function, specifying the package you want to use within curly brackets. You can specify your margins in the square brackets.
LaTeXs margins are, by default, 1.5 inches wide on 12pt documents, 1.75 inches wide on 11pt documents, and 1.875 inches wide on 10pt documents. This is the standard for book margins. If you want to change them, you have several options: the geometry package, the fullpage package or changing the margins by hand.
Margins are very important when it comes to binding. No margins = Text/images cut off in the binding process. For single-sided printing, we recommend a margin of 3cm on the left side and 2.5 cm on the other three sides. For double-sided printing, we recommend a margin of 2.5 cm on all four sides.
Add a gutter margin for bound documents A gutter margin adds extra space to the side, top margin, or inside margins of a document you plan to bind. That helps ensure that text isnt obscured by the binding. Click Layout Margins Custom Margins. In the Gutter box, enter a width for the gutter margin.
For bound books 6x 9 or smaller, use 0.5 margins on the top, outside and bottom of books, and a 0.75 inside margin. For 8.5x11 documents (bound or unbound), use 1-inch margins. Adjust margins, font size, and columns to produce 65-70 characters per line (including spaces).
As a rule of thumb, we recommend that you use a 15mm margin on all edges except for the binding edge. The biding edge will require a slightly wider margin to leave space for the binding when printing your book. This prevents images and text from being lost in the fold when you open the book.
