um so today Im going to tell you about our effort as part of the encoded Consortium um for characterizing um regulatory elements so um just very briefly introduce why were doing this so if you look at the human genome only 1.5 percent of the bases in the human genome code for proteins and the rest is not coding and particularly among the rest which is the gray area here and we are particularly interested in regulatory elements because if you look at all the genome-wide association studies and if you look at the disease Associated genetic variants in the human population more than 90 percent of them lie in the non-coding region of the human genome and luckily these variants are highly enriched in regulatory elements thats why we want to annotate the regulatory elements in the human genome so by by regulatory elements what do I mean so I mean promoters which are immediately Upstream of a transcription start side of a gene and they can be active replaced or by valence enhances that ac
