hello and welcome to this excel tips video i am sumit bansal and in this video i am going to show you three really simple ways to extract the last name from a full name in excel and none of these methods is going to use a formula so letamp;#39;s get started here i have these list of names and you can see i have a mix of names so some cells have only the first and the last name some cells would also have a middle name and then some cells would also have a prefix now if i want to extract the last name using a formula then that could get very complicated because the data is not consistent but let me show you a very simple find and replace technique then do this in seconds so iamp;#39;ll first select this data copy this and paste it here in column b so that my final result is in column b now iamp;#39;m going to use find and replace on this so with these cells selected iamp;#39;m going to hold the control key and press the h key on my keyboard and this opens the find and replace dialog

The line end (EOL), line break, line feed, line break or carriage return character is a control character, which is the end of a text line, and the following character should start in a different line. Its \r\n on the Windows system, and its Linux on \n.
How to split Full Name into First and Last Name in Excel Enter the formula of =LEFT(A2,FIND( ,A2,1)-1) in a blank cell, says Cell B2 in this case. Enter the formula of =RIGHT(A2,LEN(A2)-FIND( ,A2,1)) in another blank cell, Cell C2 in this case.
Most use cases are going that the EOL of csv is CR/LF. if the above is your text file. I have found that just pressing enter works in the text file. This is what worked for me.
End of Line A newline (line feed) character \n [Unix and Linux systems] A carriage-return character \r [older Apple computers] A carriage-return character followed immediately by a newline character \r\n [Microsoft systems] A next-line character … [Unicode text files]
Follow these steps: Select the column of names that you want to separate. Click on the Data tab in the ribbon. Click on Text to Columns. Choose the Delimited option. Select the delimiter that separates first and last names for instance, a space character or a comma. Click on Next.
The CRLF character (CR = Carriage Return, LF= Line Feed) is used to separate the individual data sets (rows) (Windows operating systems), i.e. each data set must be followed by a CRLF. The CSV file must end with a CRLF character.
Rules for CSV file naming The file name must begin with a table or group reference, followed by a start time, and end in . CSV. The start time in the file name must be at or before the first time stamp in the file. The end time is optional and can be at or after the last time stamp in the file.
The End of Line (EOL) character is actually two ASCII characters the combination of the CR and LF characters. It moves the cursor both down to the next line and to the beginning of that line; this is the equivalent of the enter key in most typing software.
